π Sri Lanka’s two monsoons explained
Two weather systems shape the island’s seasons:
- The southwest (Yala) monsoon runs roughly from May to September, bringing rain to the west and south coasts and the hill country.
- The northeast (Maha) monsoon runs from November to March, bringing rain to the east and north.
October and November are inter-monsoonal and can be unsettled island-wide. The practical takeaway: in the European winter, head to the south and west coasts; in the European summer, head to the east coast.
π Best time by region
| Region | Best months |
|---|---|
| South & west coast (Mirissa, Galle, Bentota, Unawatuna) | December β April |
| East coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) | May β September |
| Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa) | All year; drier Jan β September |
| Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella) | January β April (clearest) |
π Best time for the big experiences
- Whale watching in Mirissa: November to April (peak JanuaryβMarch).
- Whale watching in Trincomalee: March to September.
- The elephant Gathering at Minneriya: August to September.
- Leopard safari in Yala: February to June (note Block 1 closes for several weeks in the late dry season β dates announced yearly).
- Surfing in Arugam Bay: May to September.
- Adam’s Peak pilgrimage: December to May.
π Month-by-month guide
December β February (peak season)
The best and busiest time for the south and west coasts and the hill country β sunny beaches, clear tea-country views and peak whale watching at Mirissa. Book ahead for the festive weeks.
March β April
Still excellent on the south and west, hot in the lowlands, and the clearest skies for Horton Plains. The east coast begins to open up. Avurudu (Sinhala and Tamil New Year) falls in mid-April.
May β June
The southwest monsoon arrives on the south and west. Time to switch to the east coast β Trincomalee and Pasikudah come into their own, and Arugam Bay’s surf season begins. The Cultural Triangle stays largely dry.
July β August
Peak east-coast season and the European summer high season. The Minneriya elephant Gathering peaks, Arugam Bay surf is at its best, and Kandy’s spectacular Esala Perahera procession takes place.
September β October
Shoulder season. September is still good on the east coast; October is the most unsettled month island-wide as the monsoons change over. Good value and fewer crowds.
November
The south and west coasts reopen as the northeast monsoon starts on the east. Whale season begins at Mirissa. A good-value month before the December peak.

β Frequently Asked Questions
What is the rainiest month in Sri Lanka?
October and November are the most unsettled island-wide, as the monsoons change over. But even then, rain is often short afternoon downpours rather than all-day grey, and one coast is usually drier than the other.
Can I visit Sri Lanka during the monsoon?
Yes. Because the two monsoons hit opposite coasts, there is always a dry region. We simply plan your route around the weather β beaches on whichever coast is in season.
When is the cheapest time to visit Sri Lanka?
The shoulder months of May, June, September and October generally offer the best value and the fewest crowds, with the east coast at its best in MayβSeptember.
