Do we need to be able to swim?

Yes. You will wear a buoyancy aid and a helmet and there are safety kayaks on the water, but you should be a competent swimmer and comfortable being tipped out, because people do come out of the raft in the rapids and that is part of it. Minimum age is usually 10 and there is no upper limit if you are reasonably fit.

When is the water best?

The rapids are biggest from May to December when the southwest monsoon feeds the river; in the driest months, February and March, the run is gentler and better for families and nervous first-timers. Nothing is cancelled for ordinary rain, but in a heavy flood the operators suspend rafting for safety and we switch you to the jungle walk, the waterfall and the filming location, refunding the rafting fee.

Is the rafting private?

Your vehicle and chauffeur-guide are private. The raft itself is shared – rafts seat six to eight and are run by the river operator's certified instructors, so you may be sharing with another small group. A whole-raft booking can be arranged for groups of six or more.

Can I customise this itinerary?

Of course. You can add or remove days, change hotels, upgrade to boutique or luxury properties or swap activities. We'll send a revised quote within 24 hours.

Family, senior and accessibility friendly. We can arrange an elder-friendly set-up (slower pace, shorter drives, ground-floor rooms, lift-access hotels, wheelchair-friendly vehicles and skip-the-climb alternatives such as the Sigiriya museum and gardens or the Pidurangala base viewpoint) and a child-friendly set-up (child and booster seats, family or connecting rooms, hotels with pools, shorter driving days and kid-friendly meals).

Day 01 :

Kitulgala White-Water Rafting Day Tour

Pick-up from your hotel in Colombo, Negombo or Kandy in the morning – Kitulgala sits roughly halfway between them. After a safety briefing and kit issue, you raft about five kilometres of the Kelani through seven named rapids, grade 2 to 3, with certified instructors in each raft. It takes around two hours with time in the calm stretches to swim and to jump from the rocks if you want to. Afterwards, a riverside lunch and the option of a short jungle walk to the Bridge on the River Kwai filming location, a waterfall swim, or confidence jumps and stream sliding. Back at your hotel by late afternoon.
