How often are flights cancelled?

More often than guests expect – wind and thermals at dawn are the deciding factor and the pilot makes the call on the morning, sometimes after you have arrived at the field. Cancellations of one flight in four or five are normal. If it happens you get a full refund or a place on another morning, so the only real cost is the early alarm. For that reason we suggest booking it for your first available morning in the Cultural Triangle rather than your last, so there is a second chance.

Where exactly do we land?

Wherever the wind takes the balloon – a balloon steers only by changing altitude, so the pilot chooses a field as the flight ends and the chase vehicle drives to meet you. It might be a paddy field, a track or a village edge, usually somewhere between five and fifteen kilometres from the launch point. It is part of the morning, and a small crowd of curious neighbours usually arrives before the car does.

Is the balloon private?

No. You fly in a shared basket with up to eight passengers and a commercial pilot; the price is per person. A private balloon can be chartered at a considerably higher price if you want one – ask and we will quote it.

Can I customise this itinerary?

Of course. You can add or remove days, change hotels, upgrade to boutique or luxury properties or swap activities. We'll send a revised quote within 24 hours.

Hotels and accommodation are not included in the standard tour price. You are free to book your own stays, or let us organise a complete accommodation package for you in your preferred hotel tier (guesthouse, 3★, 4★, 5★ or boutique/villa). We work with hotels across the island and can quote your whole trip as one package.

Family, senior and accessibility friendly. We can arrange an elder-friendly set-up (slower pace, shorter drives, ground-floor rooms, lift-access hotels, wheelchair-friendly vehicles and skip-the-climb alternatives such as the Sigiriya museum and gardens or the Pidurangala base viewpoint) and a child-friendly set-up (child and booster seats, family or connecting rooms, hotels with pools, shorter driving days and kid-friendly meals).

Guides and languages. Our chauffeur-guides work in English, German and Hindi, and we can arrange French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese and Japanese speaking guides on request.

Meals. The meals shown in the itinerary are what we include when we arrange your accommodation on half board. If you book your own hotels, your meals follow your own hotel booking – tell us which you prefer.

Start dates. This tour is private and runs on any date you choose within its season, subject to availability. It operates in January, February, March, April, November, December – outside those months the conditions make it either impossible or much less rewarding, and we will say so and suggest an alternative rather than take the booking. Day 01 :

Sigiriya Hot Air Balloon Flight

Pick-up from your hotel in Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana at about 5:00 am for the short drive to the launch field near Kandalama Lake. You watch the envelope inflate, then lift off at first light for a flight of roughly 45 minutes to an hour, drifting at whatever height and direction the wind gives that morning – often over paddy fields, tanks and village compounds, with Sigiriya and Pidurangala on the horizon. Where you land depends on the wind; the chase vehicle finds you, and there is a sparkling-wine toast and a flight certificate in the field before you are driven back for breakfast. Flights operate only from November to April and only if conditions are right at dawn; if the pilot cancels, you are refunded in full or rebooked.
