Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle is the heartland of the island’s ancient civilisation — a region bounded by the old capitals of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy, packed with UNESCO World Heritage sites. Most travellers need two to three days to see the highlights. This guide explains what to see, how to route it and how long to spend.

🛕 How many days do you need for the Cultural Triangle?

Our Cultural Triangle Heritage Tour – 6 Days covers it in depth, or it forms the first few days of our Classic 10-Day Tour.

🛕 The must-see sites

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

The island’s most iconic sight — a 5th-century palace atop a 200-metre rock, with water gardens, frescoes and a 1,200-step climb. Start at 7:00 am. Read our Sigiriya guide.

Dambulla Cave Temple

Five caves of more than 150 Buddha statues and 800-year-old murals, 20 km from Sigiriya. See Dambulla.

Polonnaruwa

The best-preserved ancient city, flat and perfect to explore by bicycle, with the magnificent Gal Vihara Buddhas. See Polonnaruwa.

Anuradhapura

The first capital and a living sacred city of colossal stupas and the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree. See Anuradhapura.

Minneriya (elephant safari)

Not a ruin but unmissable: between August and September up to 300 wild elephants gather here in “The Gathering”. See Minneriya.

📅 Best time to visit the Cultural Triangle

The Cultural Triangle is drier than the coasts and good much of the year, with the driest months roughly January to September. Climb Sigiriya and explore the ancient cities early in the morning to avoid the heat, and time a Minneriya safari for August–September if you want the Gathering.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need for the Cultural Triangle?

Two days for the essentials (Sigiriya, Dambulla and one more), three to do it comfortably with Polonnaruwa and a safari, and four or more to include Anuradhapura and Mihintale at a relaxed pace.

Where should I stay in the Cultural Triangle?

Sigiriya or Habarana are the best bases — both are central to all the main sites, with accommodation from guesthouses to luxury lodges.

Is there a Cultural Triangle combined ticket?

Not for the main sites — Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura are each ticketed separately. We include all listed fees in our tours so you do not deal with gate tickets.

Can I do the Cultural Triangle as a day trip?

Sigiriya and Dambulla can be done as a long day trip from Colombo, Kandy or the beaches, but to see the ancient cities properly, two or three nights in the region is far better.
