π° Sri Lanka daily budget: a quick overview
| Style | Per person / day | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | USD 45β70 | Guesthouses, local food, some shared transport |
| Mid-range | USD 90β160 | 3β4β hotels, private driver, daily activities |
| Luxury | USD 250β450+ | 5β hotels & boutique villas, premium guide, fine dining |
These include accommodation, food, transport, a guide where relevant and entrance fees, but not international flights or visa.
π° What a private tour costs
A private, chauffeur-guided tour is the most popular way to see Sri Lanka, and better value than many expect because you are not subsidising a group coach. As a 2026 guide, per person based on two sharing, our land-only prices (private air-conditioned vehicle, English-speaking chauffeur-guide, entrance fees and listed activities) start from roughly:
- 5 days: from ~USD 300
- 7 days: from ~USD 420β520
- 10 days: from ~USD 550β650
- 14 days: from ~USD 760
We quote the tour separately from hotels on purpose, so you can choose your own accommodation tier rather than paying for rooms you did not pick. See all tour packages.
π° Accommodation costs
| Tier | Per person / night (twin) |
|---|---|
| Guesthouse / 2β | USD 20β25 |
| Standard 3β | USD 30β45 |
| Superior 4β | USD 55β80 |
| Boutique villas & tea bungalows | USD 90β130 |
| Luxury 5β & tented camps | USD 140+ |
π Food and drink
Sri Lanka is inexpensive to eat in. A rice-and-curry lunch at a local spot costs USD 2β4; a meal at a tourist restaurant USD 6β12; a beer around USD 2β3. Even in nice hotels, dinner rarely exceeds USD 15β25. Budget roughly USD 10β25 per day for food if not on half board.
π° Entrance fees β budget for these separately
Entrance fees are set by the government, change with exchange rates and can add up, so we quote them transparently. Headline 2026 fees for foreign adults:
- Sigiriya Rock Fortress: ~USD 35
- Polonnaruwa / Anuradhapura: ~USD 30 each
- Dambulla Cave Temple: ~LKR 3,000
- Temple of the Tooth, Kandy: ~LKR 2,000
- Yala safari: ~USD 25 entry (about USD 46 all-in with service charge, VAT and vehicle)
- Udawalawe / Wilpattu safari: ~USD 15 entry + charges
- Galle Fort: free
Our full Sri Lanka entrance fees guide lists every major site. On our tours, listed entrance fees are included so there is nothing to pay at the gate.
π° Transport costs
A private car with driver is the most efficient way to get around and typically works out around USD 60β90 a day for the vehicle, fuel and driver combined β split between your group. Trains are extremely cheap (the scenic KandyβElla reserved seat is only a few dollars at face value). Tuk-tuks are fine for short hops in towns.
π° What’s not included in most budgets
- International flights β varies hugely by origin and season.
- Sri Lanka ETA (visa) β free for 40 nationalities in 2026; a fee applies to others. See our visa guide.
- Travel insurance β always recommended.
- Tips β around USD 10β15 a day for your chauffeur-guide is customary.

β Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sri Lanka expensive to visit?
No β Sri Lanka is excellent value. Food and transport are cheap, and accommodation spans every budget. The main variable costs are your hotel tier and entrance fees.
How much money should I bring per day?
If your tour and hotels are pre-arranged, around USD 20β40 a day covers meals not included, drinks, tips and small purchases. Carry some cash in rupees; cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants.
Why do you quote the tour and hotels separately?
So you are in control of your accommodation budget. You can book your own stays or let us arrange any tier from guesthouse to 5-star β you only pay for the standard you actually choose.
