Tour Overview
A private tour built around a slower rhythm. No transfer day involves more than about four and a half hours in the car and most are under three, every hotel is chosen for lift access and ground-floor rooms where possible, and every site has a step-free or short-walk alternative so nothing has to be skipped for the sake of stairs.
You still see the island’s headline sights – the Cultural Triangle, Polonnaruwa, the elephants of Minneriya, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy and the tea country above Nuwara Eliya. What changes is the pace: later starts, longer stops, unhurried lunches and a chauffeur-guide who is used to travelling with older guests.

Itinerary
Every tour is 100% flexible and customizable. This itinerary is a starting point – we can change the order of the days, add or remove nights, swap activities or extend the tour to match your exact dates, pace and interests.
Hotels and accommodation are not included in the standard tour price. You are free to book your own stays, or let us organise a complete accommodation package for you in your preferred hotel tier (guesthouse, 3★, 4★, 5★ or boutique/villa). We work with hotels across the island and can quote your whole trip as one package.
Please contact us before you place a booking so that we can finalise your customised itinerary and your accommodation plan, confirm availability for your dates and send you a final price.
Family, senior and accessibility friendly. We can arrange an elder-friendly set-up (slower pace, shorter drives, ground-floor rooms, lift-access hotels, wheelchair-friendly vehicles and skip-the-climb alternatives such as the Sigiriya museum and gardens or the Pidurangala base viewpoint) and a child-friendly set-up (child and booster seats, family or connecting rooms, hotels with pools, shorter driving days and kid-friendly meals).
Guides and languages. Our chauffeur-guides work in English, German and Hindi, and we can arrange French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese and Japanese speaking guides on request.
Meals. The meals shown in the itinerary are what we include when we arrange your accommodation on half board. If you book your own hotels, your meals follow your own hotel booking – tell us which you prefer.
Any start date. All tours are private and run on any date you choose, all year round, subject to availability. Tell us your arrival and departure dates and we will build the itinerary around your flights.

Ayubowan! Your Lanka Itinerary chauffeur-guide meets you in the arrivals hall at Bandaranaike International Airport with a name board and a cold drink. Negombo is only 20 minutes away, so there is time to rest after the flight. In the late afternoon, take an easy walk along the Dutch-era canal, visit the busy fish market (best before noon) or watch the outrigger fishing boats return at sunset. Your guide will brief you on the journey ahead over dinner.
Meals: Dinner · Overnight: Negombo · Travel: 20 min (10 km) · Distance: ~10 km
A late-morning start and an easy drive inland with a proper stop for king coconut and another for lunch. Check in near Sigiriya by mid-afternoon and rest. Those who feel up to it can take a short, flat village walk before dinner; everyone else has the pool and the garden.
Meals: Dinner · Overnight: Sigiriya / Habarana · Travel: 4 hrs (150 km) · Distance: ~150 km
We start at 7:00 am while it is cool. If you want to climb Sigiriya your guide will go up with you, slowly, with rests at every landing. If you would rather not, you will see the water gardens, the boulder gardens and the excellent site museum at ground level, and then walk the short flat path to the Pidurangala base viewpoint for the classic view of the rock itself – many people find it the better photograph anyway. After lunch and a rest, we visit the Dambulla Cave Temple; the approach is a stepped climb, so we can instead visit the Golden Temple and museum at the base if you prefer. Nothing on this day is compulsory.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner · Overnight: Sigiriya / Habarana · Travel: 40 min each way · Distance: ~30 km
Polonnaruwa is the easiest of the ancient cities to see comfortably: it is flat, and your guide can drive you from monument to monument so that each walk is only a few minutes – the Gal Vihara reclining Buddha, the Royal Palace and the Vatadage. In the late afternoon, a jeep safari to see wild elephants. Between August and September the herd gathers at Minneriya; from October to December and again from May to July it moves to Kaudulla; from January to April we use Hurulu Eco Park, where elephants are resident all year. Your guide will take whichever park is right for the month you travel, and will ask the driver to keep well back and stay still.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner · Overnight: Sigiriya / Habarana · Travel: 1 hr each way · Distance: ~30 km
Drive south to Kandy through Matale. Stop at a spice garden to see cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg and pepper growing and learn how they are used in Ayurveda and Sri Lankan cooking. Continue to Kandy, check in and in the evening watch a traditional Kandyan dance and fire-walking show. Then visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (UNESCO) for the evening puja, when drummers and pilgrims bring flowers to the golden shrine.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner · Overnight: Kandy · Travel: 2.5 hrs (95 km) · Distance: ~95 km
A relaxed day in Kandy. The Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens are the highlight for most of our senior guests: 60 hectares of level, paved paths, an avenue of royal palms, the giant Javan fig and plenty of shaded benches, and we can arrange a garden buggy. After lunch, the Arthur's Seat viewpoint over the lake (seen from the car), a short walk along the lakeside, and a gem or wood-carving workshop only if you would like one – we take no commission and will not take you shopping otherwise.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner · Overnight: Kandy · Travel: City sightseeing · Distance: ~30 km
Climb into the tea country on one of the most scenic roads on the island. Stop at Ramboda Falls, then visit a working tea factory to watch leaf being withered, rolled and dried – and taste fresh Ceylon tea at its source. Arrive in Nuwara Eliya, known as 'Little England' for its colonial bungalows, rose gardens, post office and golf course. Take an evening walk around Gregory Lake.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner · Overnight: Nuwara Eliya · Travel: 3 hrs (80 km) · Distance: ~80 km
Today is the longest drive of the tour, so we start after a full breakfast and break it properly: a stop at a tea estate viewpoint on the way down from the hills, lunch at a hotel with a garden near Kitulgala, and a rest stop before the expressway. You will be at your Colombo hotel in time to sit on the terrace before dinner. If you would rather not do this drive in one day, tell us and we will add a night in Kitulgala or Kandy.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner · Overnight: Colombo · Travel: 4.5 hrs with two long stops (185 km) · Distance: ~185 km
After breakfast, enjoy a short city tour of Colombo – Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Square and the Pettah market – with time for last-minute shopping at Dutch Hospital or Odel. Transfer to the airport for your departure flight. Bohoma sthuthi – thank you for travelling with Lanka Itinerary!
Meals: Breakfast · Overnight: — · Travel: 1 hr to airport · Distance: ~45 km

Frequently Asked Questions
No, and a good number of our guests do not. The water gardens, boulder gardens and site museum are all at ground level, and the short flat walk to the base of Pidurangala gives you the best photograph of the rock. If you do want to climb, your guide will go at your pace with rests – it is about 1,200 steps with handrails on the upper sections, and there is no shame in turning back at the frescoes.
Yes, on request – a van with a ramp or lift, and a folding chair if you need one. Please tell us at the enquiry stage rather than after booking, because these vehicles are limited and need to be reserved. If mobility is the main consideration, look at our 8-day accessible tour instead, which is routed specifically around step-free access.
That is easily done. Because the tour is private, a rest day costs you nothing in lost sightseeing – we simply move the plan. Your guide carries a list of doctors and private hospitals in each region, and Sri Lanka's private hospitals in Colombo and Kandy are good.
Yes. Sri Lankan cooking can be very hot, but every hotel and restaurant we use will prepare mild versions, and your guide will order for you until you know what you like. Tell us about diabetes, low salt, gluten or any other requirement and we will brief the hotels in advance.
Yes. The tour is private for your group with your own vehicle and chauffeur-guide – you won't share with strangers.
Of course. You can add or remove days, change hotels, upgrade to boutique or luxury properties or swap activities. We'll send a revised quote within 24 hours.
The price is per person based on two adults sharing a room in the hotel category shown. Prices vary by season, hotel choice and group size – request a quote for your exact dates.
