Q: Will we see a leopard?

Maybe. Yala has one of the highest leopard densities in the world and a dawn game drive gives you a genuine chance, but we will not promise a sighting and you should be suspicious of anyone who does. What we do promise is the first hour after opening, a tracker who knows the block, and a driver under instruction not to speed, not to chase and not to join a twenty-jeep scrum around a sighting. If leopards matter more to you than anything else, ask us about Wilpattu – fewer jeeps, more space, and a longer drive.

Q: What if Yala is closed?

Block 1, the block everyone means by "Yala", closes for several weeks most years in the late dry season – in 2026 from 14 September to 15 October – and the dates are announced each year rather than fixed. Some honesty about the alternatives: Block 2 is a strict natural reserve and is closed to visitors permanently, and Blocks 3 and 4 need specific Department of Wildlife Conservation permission and are not available on a day tour. That leaves Block 5, entered through the Galge gate, which is capped at around twenty vehicles a day and is about 45 km from Tissamaharama rather than 15 – so it is quieter, but it adds roughly an hour each way. When Block 1 is closed we will usually suggest Udawalawe instead: it is on the same road, cheaper to enter, and the most reliable elephant park in the country. We refund the difference in the park fee either way.

Q: Is this tour private?

Yes. The tour is private for your group with your own vehicle and chauffeur-guide – you won't share with strangers.

Q: Can I customise this itinerary?

You have to get from Ella to the south coast anyway. This turns that transfer into the best day of your trip: a full morning leopard safari in Yala on the way through, and your luggage waiting in the car.

It solves a real problem. Doing Yala as a return day trip from Ella means five hours in the car for a four-hour safari, and a separate transfer day afterwards.

Family, senior and accessibility friendly. We can arrange an elder-friendly set-up (slower pace, shorter drives, ground-floor rooms, lift-access hotels, wheelchair-friendly vehicles and skip-the-climb alternatives such as the Sigiriya museum and gardens or the Pidurangala base viewpoint) and a child-friendly set-up (child and booster seats, family or connecting rooms, hotels with pools, shorter driving days and kid-friendly meals).

Guides and languages. Our chauffeur-guides work in English, German and Hindi, and we can arrange French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese and Japanese speaking guides on request.

Meals. The meals shown in the itinerary are what we include when we arrange your accommodation on half board. If you book your own hotels, your meals follow your own hotel booking – tell us which you prefer.

Day 01 :

Yala Safari from Ella with Drop-off at Mirissa, Galle or Tangalle

A 3:00 am departure from your Ella hotel with your bags – it is about two and a half hours down through Wellawaya, and we want to be at the gate for the 6:00 am opening – the best hour of the day for leopards, and ahead of the jeep queue. Four to five hours in an open 4x4 with a tracker in Yala Block 1, or in Block 5 through the Galge gate when Block 1 is closed for the dry season. Packed breakfast in the park. We come out around 11:00 am, you have lunch and a shower stop, and then your chauffeur-guide drives you on to your hotel in Mirissa, Unawatuna, Galle, Hikkaduwa or Tangalle, arriving in the late afternoon.
