This one-week itinerary covers the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Kandy, the tea-country train to Ella, a wildlife safari and a taste of the south coast. πŸ—ΊοΈ Day-by-day: one week in Sri Lanka

Days 1–2: Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle

Transfer from the airport to Sigiriya (about four hours) and rest. The next morning, climb the Lion Rock at 7:00 am and visit the Dambulla Cave Temple in the afternoon. With only seven days, we skip Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura to keep the pace comfortable β€” though either can be swapped in.

Day 3: Kandy

Drive to Kandy via a spice garden, with the evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth and, if you like, a Kandyan dance show.

Day 4: Tea country and the train to Ella

Climb to Nuwara Eliya for a tea factory visit, then take the famous hill-country train to Ella. Book reserved seats early.

Day 5: Ella to Yala

A morning at the Nine Arch Bridge or Little Adam’s Peak, then the drive to Yala. Our Yala safari from Ella can combine the transfer with a game drive.

Days 6–7: Safari, coast and Galle

A dawn leopard safari, then down to Mirissa or Galle for a beach afternoon. On the final morning, walk Galle Fort before the two-hour transfer to the airport.

✨ Short on time? Consider 5 days

If you only have five days, focus on Sigiriya, Kandy and one safari β€” the shape of our Sri Lanka Essentials – 5 Days. Trying to add the south coast in five days means too much driving.

πŸ’° How much does a 7-day Sri Lanka trip cost?

As a 2026 guide, a private chauffeur-guided land tour (vehicle, guide, entrance fees, listed activities) starts from around USD 420–520 per person based on two sharing, with accommodation added according to your chosen hotel tier. Our trip cost guide breaks it down in full.

πŸ“… Best time for a 7-day trip

This west-and-south route is best December to April. In the May–September southwest monsoon we route the ending to the east coast instead. See the best time to visit guide.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Yes, for the highlights. One week covers Sigiriya, Kandy, the tea-country train, one safari and a day on the coast. It does not fit the east coast, Jaffna or a long beach stay β€” for those, allow 10–14 days.

What should I skip on a 7-day trip?

Usually Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura (to avoid long driving days), and a dedicated beach stay. We keep Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, a safari and a taste of the south coast.

Can I do this itinerary in reverse?

Yes β€” starting on the coast and ending in the Cultural Triangle works equally well, and sometimes better depending on your flight times. Tell us your dates and we will optimise it.
