🗺️ Day-by-day: the full 10-day route
Days 1–2: The Cultural Triangle
From Bandaranaike International Airport it is about four hours to Sigiriya, so day one is really a travel-and-rest day. On day two, start at 7:00 am to climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress before the heat — a 1,200-step ascent past 5th-century water gardens, the cloud-maiden frescoes and the giant lion’s paws. In the afternoon, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, five caves filled with more than 150 Buddha statues. If you would rather not climb, the gardens, museum and the Pidurangala viewpoint make an excellent alternative.
Day 3: Polonnaruwa and on to Kandy
Explore the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa — ideally by bicycle — taking in the Gal Vihara rock Buddhas, then drive south to Kandy, stopping at a Matale spice garden. Arrive in time for the evening puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Many travellers add an afternoon elephant safari at Minneriya on this day in the August–September season.
Day 4: Kandy
A gentler day in the hill capital: the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, the lakeside, the central market and a traditional Kandyan dance performance in the evening.
Day 5: Into the tea country
Climb into the hills to Nuwara Eliya at 1,900 metres, stopping at a working tea factory to follow the leaf from plucking to tasting, and at the Ramboda waterfalls. Bring a light jacket — the evenings are cool.
Day 6: The famous blue train to Ella
Take the scenic hill-country train from Nanu Oya to Ella — one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the world. Reserved seats sell out early, so this is the one thing to book ahead (see our Kandy to Ella train guide). Your guide drives your luggage by road and meets the train.
Day 7: Ella to Yala
A morning walk up Little Adam’s Peak or to the Nine Arch Bridge, then the drive down to Yala. Tip: our Yala safari from Ella with a coastal drop-off turns this transfer into a full game drive and saves you a day.
Day 8: Leopard safari and the coast
A dawn jeep safari in Yala — home to one of the highest leopard densities in the world — then transfer to Mirissa on the south coast to start the beach half of your trip.
Days 9–10: Mirissa, Galle and home
Between November and April, go whale watching at dawn to see blue whales. In the afternoon, walk the ramparts of Galle Fort. On day 10, transfer to the airport — about two hours from Mirissa.
🗺️ Two alternative 10-day routes
Wildlife-focused: swap one Cultural Triangle night for a second safari park — pair Yala’s leopards with the reliable elephants of Udawalawe, or the quiet of Wilpattu. Our Sri Lanka Wildlife Safari is built around this.
Beach-focused: shorten the touring to seven days and finish with three or four nights on the coast — the shape of our Round Tour & Beach Holiday, which can be trimmed to ten days.
💰 How much does a 10-day Sri Lanka trip cost?
A private, chauffeur-guided 10-day tour is better value than most visitors expect, because you are not paying for a group coach. As a rough 2026 guide, per person based on two sharing: the land tour (private vehicle, English-speaking chauffeur-guide, entrance fees and listed activities) starts from around USD 550–650, with accommodation on top according to the hotel tier you choose — from about USD 25 per night for a guesthouse to USD 140+ for 5-star. See our full Sri Lanka trip cost guide for a detailed breakdown.
🗺️ Best time to do this itinerary
This west-and-south route works best from December to April, the dry season on the south coast. From May to September the southwest monsoon makes the beaches rough, so we flip the beach half to the east coast (Trincomalee or Pasikudah). There is no bad month in Sri Lanka — only a wrong coast for the month. See our best time to visit guide.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?
Yes. Ten days comfortably covers the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hill country, one safari and the south coast without long driving days. With 14 days you can add more beach time, a second safari park or the east coast.
Is it better to travel Sri Lanka by private driver or public transport?
For a 10-day trip covering this much ground, a private chauffeur-guide is far more efficient and not much more expensive than it sounds — you travel on your own schedule, stop where you like, and have local knowledge throughout. The scenic train is the one leg worth doing by rail for the experience.
How much driving is involved each day?
On this route, no transfer is longer than about four hours, and most are two to three. Sri Lanka’s roads are slow, so we plan realistic days rather than cramming in extra sights.
Can this itinerary be customised?
Completely. It is a starting point. You can add nights, swap safari parks, move the beach to the end, or travel at a gentler pace. Contact us with your dates and we will build it around you.
