Wilpattu National Park is Sri Lanka’s largest national park and its most peaceful big-game reserve. Named for its ‘villus’ — natural rain-fed lakes scattered through the forest — Wilpattu offers leopard sightings in a wild, uncrowded setting on the northwest coast, a world away from the jeep queues of Yala.
The park’s dense forest, open villus and scrubland shelter leopards, sloth bears, elephants, spotted deer, sambar, water buffalo and a rich variety of water birds around the lakes. Sightings take more patience than at Yala because the vegetation is thicker, but the reward is having a leopard almost to yourself rather than sharing it with twenty other jeeps.
Wilpattu is easily combined with the sacred city of Anuradhapura, an hour and a half away, and makes an excellent northern alternative for travellers who want wildlife without the crowds. The best months are February to October, when water levels drop and animals gather at the villus.
Wilpattu is the wildlife highlight of our Birds & Rainforest and off-the-beaten-path tours, and pairs naturally with Anuradhapura. It can be added to any private round tour for travellers who want leopards without the crowds.

It depends what you want. Wilpattu is far quieter, with fewer jeeps and a wilder feel, but sightings take more patience because the forest is denser. Yala has a higher leopard density and more sightings but many more vehicles. For solitude, choose Wilpattu; for the best odds of a leopard, Yala.
About USD 15 per foreign adult in 2026, plus service charge and VAT — the same as Udawalawe and cheaper than Yala. On our safaris the jeep, tracker and all park fees are included.
February to October, when water levels in the villus drop and animals gather around them. A dawn drive gives the best chance of a leopard or sloth bear.
Villus are natural, rain-fed lakes scattered through the forest — the feature that gives Wilpattu its name and character. Wildlife congregates around them, especially in the dry season, so they are the focus of most game drives.
Yes. Anuradhapura's sacred city is only about an hour and a half away, so many travellers pair a Wilpattu safari with a day among the ancient stupas.
