Bentota is the west coast’s premier beach resort, where a long golden beach meets the Bentota River lagoon. Only a couple of hours from Colombo and the airport, it combines easy swimming, watersports and river safaris with some of the country’s best beach hotels, making it the classic place to relax at the start or end of a Sri Lanka tour.
The wide beach and the calm lagoon make Bentota Sri Lanka’s watersports hub — jet skiing, banana boats, windsurfing and water skiing on the river mouth. The Madu River mangrove safari, just up the coast, is a highlight: two hours weaving among islands with a stop at a cinnamon plantation, and nearby Kosgoda has a turtle conservation project. The town is also home to a Geoffrey Bawa-designed heritage and the Brief Garden.
Bentota is at its best from November to April. Its position close to the airport makes it ideal for a beach stay bookended with a round tour, and the whole south coast — Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa — lies within easy reach.
Bentota is the standard beach choice on our round-tour-and-beach and honeymoon itineraries, close enough to the airport for an easy first or last stop. Day trips to Galle, Sigiriya and Udawalawe run from here, and the Madu River safari is on the doorstep.
