Ella

Overview

Ella is the laid-back star of the hill country, a small town wrapped in tea-covered hills and cloud forest. It is famous for the Nine Arch Bridge, the easy sunrise hike up Little Adam’s Peak, the tougher climb of Ella Rock, and the tumbling Ravana Falls — and for being the end of the world’s most scenic train ride.

Ella, Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge

The Nine Arch Bridge, a colonial-era stone viaduct curving through the jungle, is Ella’s signature sight, best photographed as a blue train crosses it. Little Adam’s Peak is a gentle 45-minute walk to a ridge with sweeping views over Ella Gap; Ella Rock is a steeper three to four-hour hike for the fit; and Ravana Falls and the Ravana Cave add a touch of legend from the Ramayana.

Ella is the terminus of the hill-country train from Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, and a springboard for safaris at Yala and Udawalawe, which lie on the road down to the south coast. Its cafés and easy pace make it a favourite place to slow down for a night or two.

Several trains cross daily; the popular times are roughly 6:00 am, 9:30 am, noon and mid-afternoon, though times shift, so check locally on the day. Arrive early for the best photograph and the softest light.

Little Adam's Peak is an easy 45-minute walk on a clear path, suitable for most people. Ella Rock is a steeper, less obvious three to four-hour round trip better suited to fit walkers, ideally with a local guide to find the route.

The scenic way is the hill-country train from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya, one of the most beautiful railway journeys anywhere. By road it is a few hours from the tea country. We can book your reserved train seat and have your guide meet the train.

Yes. Both Yala and Udawalawe lie on the road down from Ella to the south coast, so our transfer safaris include a dawn game drive on the way and drop you at your beach hotel the same afternoon, with your luggage carried.
