Kitulgala

Overview

Kitulgala is Sri Lanka’s adventure capital, a lush rainforest town on the banks of the Kelani River between Colombo and Kandy. Famous as the filming location of The Bridge on the River Kwai, it is the island’s best spot for white-water rafting, with grade 2 and 3 rapids, jungle trails and waterfalls that make it a favourite day trip for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike.

Adventure & White-Water Rafting in Kitulgala

The Kelani River tumbles through Kitulgala over a series of named rapids, and a rafting run of around five kilometres takes you through seven of them with certified guides – exciting but accessible to anyone who can swim, with calm stretches in between for a float and a swim. Around the rafting, Kitulgala offers waterfall abseiling, canyoning, confidence jumps, stream slides and guided jungle walks.

The surrounding rainforest is a birdwatcher’s delight, home to many of Sri Lanka’s endemic species, and a short walk leads to the spot where David Lean’s Oscar-winning film was shot in 1957. Kitulgala sits about two and a half hours from Colombo and makes an easy, exhilarating stop on the way to the hill country.

Key Activities

Yes. The Kelani River's rapids are grade 2 and 3 – exciting but manageable for anyone who can swim and is reasonably fit. You raft with certified guides, wear a helmet and buoyancy aid, and there are safety kayaks on the water. The minimum age is usually 10. People do sometimes come out of the raft in the rapids, so you should be a confident swimmer.

Rafting runs all year. The rapids are biggest from May to December when the southwest monsoon feeds the river; in the drier months the run is gentler and better for families and nervous first-timers. Heavy floods occasionally pause rafting for safety, when we switch to the jungle walk, waterfalls and filming location.

About two and a half hours by road. Kitulgala sits roughly halfway between Colombo and Kandy, which makes it an easy adventure day trip from either, or a stop on the way into the hill country.

Plenty. You can abseil down waterfalls, try canyoning and stream sliding, take confidence jumps into river pools, walk the rainforest trails for endemic birds, and visit the spot where The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed in 1957.

Yes. Because it lies on the Colombo–Kandy road, Kitulgala fits easily into a private round tour as a half-day or full-day adventure stop. Tell us your dates and we will build it in.
