Trincomalee is the jewel of Sri Lanka’s east coast — one of the world’s finest natural harbours, ringed by white-sand beaches at Nilaveli and Uppuveli, with excellent snorkelling at Pigeon Island and its own whale-watching season. Its calm, clear waters come into their best months just as the south and west coasts turn wet.
The beaches of Nilaveli and Uppuveli are broad, quiet and turquoise, and just offshore lies Pigeon Island National Park, a marine reserve with live coral, reef sharks and turtles in water shallow enough to snorkel from the boat. Trincomalee also has its own whale-watching season from March to September — with a better chance of sperm whales than the south coast — and the clifftop Koneswaram Temple, a Hindu shrine perched above the sea at Swami Rock.
Trincomalee is at its best from April or May to September, the mirror image of the south-coast season, which makes it the perfect beach destination in the European summer. It is about six hours from Colombo by road, or a short domestic flight.
Trincomalee is the east-coast highlight of our beach and off-the-beaten-path tours, and the right beach choice for travellers visiting between May and September. Our Trincomalee whale-watching and Pigeon Island snorkelling day trips run from the Nilaveli and Uppuveli hotels.

April or May to September, the east coast's dry season — the exact opposite of the south and west. That makes Trincomalee the ideal Sri Lankan beach destination in the European summer, when Mirissa and Bentota are wet.
Yes. Trincomalee has its own season from March to September, peaking June to August, with blue whales at around 60 to 70 per cent and a much better chance of sperm whales than the south coast. Boats leave early and a naturalist is on board.
Pigeon Island is a marine national park about twenty minutes off Nilaveli beach, with live coral, blacktip reef sharks and turtles in shallow water you can snorkel from the boat. It is the east coast's top snorkelling spot, best from March to September.
About six hours from Colombo by road, or under an hour by domestic flight. It combines well with the Cultural Triangle, which lies on the way.
It comes down to timing. The south coast (Mirissa, Unawatuna, Bentota) is best November to April; Trincomalee is best May to September. Choose whichever matches your travel dates — there is no bad season in Sri Lanka, only a wrong coast for the month.
