Nuwara Eliya

Overview

Nuwara Eliya, at 1,900 metres, is the cool green heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country, nicknamed ‘Little England’ for its colonial bungalows, hedgerows and racecourse. Surrounded by emerald tea plantations, waterfalls and misty peaks, it is the base for a working tea factory visit, Gregory Lake and the dawn hike at Horton Plains.

Nuwara Eliya, the Heart of Tea Country

The town itself keeps a faded colonial charm — the red-brick post office, the half-timbered Hill Club, Victoria Park and the boating lake at Gregory. But the real draw is the surrounding hills: rolling estates where you can follow the leaf from plucking to tasting at a working factory, the tumbling Ramboda and St Clair’s waterfalls, and the World’s End precipice at Horton Plains, an hour away.

Nuwara Eliya is a stop on the hill-country train and a natural overnight between Kandy and Ella. It is noticeably cooler than the lowlands, so bring a light jacket for the evenings, especially from December to February.
