Pasikudah is famous for having one of the longest stretches of shallow coastline in the world — you can wade out for hundreds of metres in warm, waist-deep, turquoise water. On Sri Lanka’s east coast, this crescent bay of calm, clear sea and white sand is a favourite for families and anyone who wants a safe, gentle swim.
The reef-protected bay stays flat and shallow, ideal for young children, paddleboarding and snorkelling over the recovering coral. A cluster of resorts lines the beach, and the neighbouring bay of Kalkudah offers a longer, wilder and quieter stretch of sand for those who prefer to be away from the hotels.
Like the rest of the east coast, Pasikudah is at its best from May to September, when the south and west are wet. It sits a few hours south of Trincomalee and combines well with an east-coast itinerary. It is about six hours from Colombo.
